I read this via Andrew Sullivan, who appropriately awarded it a “Malkin Award” for it’s inflammatory “Conservative” rhetoric, this afternoon…and I’m still pissed at 8:15 p.m. I think my biggest hangup is the lack of self-awareness by the author, who is calling a 30-year-old Georgetown law student (on a scholarship funded by a private university) a “Welfare Queen.” My first question was: by this definition, who isn’t a welfare king or queen? Certainly not Rick Santorum, who graduated from a public law school (Penn State), at a time I’d hazard a guess that most of the tuition cost was subsidized by the state (not like now, when my UC alma mater is running $43,000 a year for in-state tuition), and worked a whole 4 years in private practice (meaning I’ve already got him beat on that front), before absconding to the US Congress - followed by the US Senate - where he - what’s the phrase “Conservatives” like to use again - “suckled at the government teat” for the next 16 years before parlaying his political connections into a cushy lobbying job from which he subsequently decided to run for President.
I can see the campaign signs now: “Rick Santorum: Welfare King.”
