Reading about the “Chinese” parenting method - and the massive amount of funds invested by the mother in this article ($3,000 per child per month?!!) makes me glad that my parents had some perspective on the idea of what constituted achievement in high school. Certainly, they expected top performance from me, but they left it to me to enroll in AP classes, do the studying, and take the tests. I always worry when I read about parents who script every second of their high schoolers’ day: what will their precious sprog do when they go off to college and have to direct their own lives? Sure some step up to the plate, but it seems like they are just as likely to either a) fall apart without parental input, or b) continue to rely on their parents in an unhealthy manner.
